So Much I Don't Understand...

Of Hippos and such...

Did you know that Hippotamuses (okay, Hippopotami) have funeral rites?

Neither did I. I was watching a documentary last night on PBS about a massive crocodile in Africa, and how this team of scientists were trying to catch it. The croc had killed a water buffalo, and left it on a small island in the river. About five hippos got out of the river, went over and sniffed, licked and gently nuzzled the dead water buffalo, then solemnly encircled the animal, and laid down on the ground, facing outward... to protect the body from the crocodiles. After about two hours, the hippos got up and left.

It was a surprising, and touching thing to see. More surpising was the fact that they were mourning another animal that wasn't one of their own. Apparently, this is the first time anyone had ever caught this on camera.

Body Energy Fields and Gravity

I went to a holistic health seminar last night where a man was demonstrating three products that his company had developed to align people's personal energy fields.

One of the results, apparently, is the way gravity interacts with your body. This I was a bit skeptical about, so I made sure I participated in a demonstration.

There was a man that weighed probably 250lbs that was sitting in a chair in front of everyone. Four of us were instructed to clasp our hands together with the index fingers sticking straight out and lift the man (two lifting under his knees, two under his arms). We succeeded in getting him about three inches off the chair.

The man was then treated with three different products that were designed to align his energy field. We then attempt to lift him again, and easily were able to lift him up to about chin level. It seriously felt like he weighed about a third of what he had initially. And yet, his mass didn't change, and neither did his true weight... just the way his body interacted with gravity. Pretty amazing stuff...

  1. Nilo, my man.

It pains me that you can study algebra and chemistry, then disregard simple physics. Mass does not change. If it were possible, believe that NASA would have developed the technology years ago to make more efficient booster rockets.

    Or forklifts.

    Or wheel-barrows.

I'm sorry, Cowboy. I wouldn't try to make fun of your beliefs, it's just hard, as an evangelical humanist (did I just coin that term?) to accept such far-flung acceptance.

  2. Oh, I know that his mass doesn't change... unless we light him on fire. But even then, those are only chemical and physical changes from one state to another.

Besides, I don't think they allow that at these seminars.

And it wasn't so much a belief (because I was pretty skeptical about the whole gravity thing) as it was an observation; a "Whoa, this guy really does seem a lot lighter!"

An evangelical humanist huh? Hey, I was here when you coined that term... remember me when you're famous!
